Today we review the first new rare in Magic 2012, Adaptive Automaton. It’s a 2/2 for 3 colorless mana that when it enters the battlefield you choose a creature type. Not only does it become that type along with its other types (artifact & construct) but it also give +1/+1 to other creatures of that type. Obviously, this is quite a boost for archetypes that otherwise wouldn’t have Lord cards. It’s a pretty solid artifact creature. It certainly improves any Tribal decks, and that little boost goes a long way to winning the game. The first thing that comes to mind is Golem decks, and how they will be improved. That’s perhaps the best application, any archetype that runs a lot of artifacts, so that you can also benefit from Tempered Steel. It is a pretty splash-able card, though, and it’s going to be interesting seeing how many different things are to be done with it.

[...] Adaptive Automaton (rare) – Easily one of the best cards in Magic 2012, never mind artifacts. This guy is both a Changeling, in that he can be any type you want him to be, and boost all other creatures of that type by 1/1. What makes him so good is that he’s a 2/2 for 3 mana on his own, and can be used in any archetype whatsoever. He makes Golem tribal very good, as well as a lot of other tribal decks. A fantastic new addition to the game of Magic. [...]
